GLOSSARY OF LABOUR TERMS AND ACRONYMS

The glossary provides dual definitions for several key terms, distinguishing between the labour concept and the human rights/equity concept, or between an employer/union right and a related procedure:

  • Discrimination: Defined as differential treatment for an improper reason, with categories for Direct, Adverse Impact, and Systemic Discrimination.
  • Arbitration: Defined with two main forms: Grievance or “rights” arbitration (deciding if a CA was broken) and Interest arbitration (deciding what should be in a new CA).
  • Racism: Defined as an ideology of superiority based on race, with specific attention to how it operates at individual, systemic, and societal levels, and is tied to power dynamics.
  • Layoff vs. Recall: The file defines a Layoff as a temporary, prolonged, or final separation from employment due to lack of work, and Recall as the process for bringing laid off workers back to work.

The document also features terms specific to education workers, such as General Interest Instructor (GI), International Language Elementary (ILE), and references to specific bodies like the TDSB and TCDSB.
